Historical restoration is always a gig we at South Jersey Waterproofing love to take on. Sure, the work is as challenging as it is with our waterproofing to homes like yours. Still, the legendary tales in those walls from so many years prior make the job an honor to perform. Of course, the history of every home, no matter who it housed, is vital to maintain. But the chance to see how these homes were constructed is always a treat too.
Even as giant fans (not NY Giants fans) of Boardwalk Empire, the Sopranos, and New Jersey’s connection to the mob and gangsters of old- it’s not every day that you get to say you had the chance to work on the former home of a notorious American gangster like Al Capone. Fortunately for us, that is one feather that we have been able to stick in our caps over the past few years.
Hitting the Pines
Starting in 2012, we began work on homes at the Historial Pine Valley Golf Course & Community in Pine Hill, NJ. These homes were built decades ago by many prominent historical figures, one of whom was the aforementioned Al Capone. He used this home as a retreat away from his life in Chicago.
In some of the photos above, you can even see that we were able to save a section of plasterboard. This piece is from what was a speakeasy in the prohibition times that had hundreds of signatures of elite people.
While Mr. Capone could escape the law and foes by taking refuge in this quiet New Jersey town, the home itself could not escape the power of nature over time.
From 2012 to 2019, we performed basement and crawlspace waterproofing services. They included mold remediation and added dehumidification systems to various homes in the community. These restoration services were done primarily because water had begun to intrude in several basements and crawlspaces. In addition, there was an ongoing groundwater issue in the community. This groundwater was then causing mold and high humidity moisture levels throughout the homes.
Thanks to our team’s diligence and attention to detail, we made the homes Jersey strong again. We returned the strength to the walls and kept the water where it belongs, outside, swimming with the fish.
