Jersey Versus the Storm
Hurricane Sandy was a devastating storm that caused widespread damage along the east coast of the United States. On October 29, 2012, the storm landed in New Jersey, bringing strong winds, heavy rain, and a massive storm surge. The storm surge caused widespread flooding in Ocean City, NJ, and many homes were damaged or destroyed.
One of the homeowners affected by Sandy was our client, whose home you see above. Their Ocean City home saw extensive damage from a substantial amount of flooding. The walls were wet and moldy, the floors were warped, and the furniture was ruined. Unfortunately, this was common for thousands of homeowners across the New Jersey coast and beyond.
After the storm, dozens and dozens of residents contacted South Jersey Waterproofing needing our assistance. And while we don’t typically do a lot of work on the shore or the coast, we knew that the communities there needed our services- so we went to this home (and many more) as soon as possible. To start, we assessed the situation and developed a plan to remediate the water damage and restore his home to its pre-storm condition.
The Process of Remediation
The first step was removing all wet and damaged materials, including the walls, floors, and furniture. Due to the storm, we also had to remove the mold and mildew growing in the water-damaged areas.
Mold growth is a significant concern after water damage, as it can further cause health problems and damage your home. We took several steps to prevent mold growth during the remediation process:
- We used HEPA vacuums to remove mold spores from the air.
- Scrubbed all surfaces with mold-killing solutions.
- Fogged the affected areas with mold inhibitors.
- Installed a new ventilation system to help circulate the air and prevent moisture from building up.
We also worked on their damaged concrete foundation, reinforced it, and installed a new waterproofing system to prevent future water damage.
People Over Things
Once we could remove all of the damaged materials and remediate the mold and water damage, the homeowners could begin rebuilding. They installed new walls, floors, and furniture- all material things that were traumatic and exhausting to replace, but they became grateful later that it was THINGS and not PEOPLE that had injuries from the storm.
Overall, the remediation process took several months. Still, we were so glad we could help restore this Ocean City home and to help this family recover from the traumatic event of Hurricane Sandy.
